Introduction

Occurs in all species in the recent hatchling.

Signs

  • Legs splay and chick is unable to stand.

Post-mortem lesions

  • Gross lesions are not usually evident.

Diagnosis

Clinical signs.

Treatment

None.

Prevention

All measures that improve chick vitality at hatching are beneficial in reducing this problem. These include good breeder nutrition, avoidance of excessive hatching egg storage, and careful monitoring of incubation conditions. The type of chick box liners and the feeding papers used in the brooding house can also influence the occurrence of the condition.
