Nobilis Gumboro 228E: power plus balance
In vaccination against Gumboro Disease, there are two conventional choices:
- Intermediate vaccines have few side effects, but limited efficacy against vvIBD in the field or in situations of high infectious pressure.
- Hot vaccines have a powerful and aggressive action, but can damage the bursa, impairing the immune response and response to other vaccinations.

Description
Nobilis Gumboro 228 E is a live vaccine against Infectious bursal disease (Gumboro) in chickens.
Composition
Active components per dose:
- Live I.B.D. virus strain 228E &ge: 2.0 log10 EID50

A freeze-dried pellet.

Indications
Immunization of chickens against Gumboro Disease (IBD).
Vaccination programme
The vaccine virus strain 228E is a less attenuated intermediate IBDV strain. As a result of this, the virus is capable of breaking through the maternal immunity at an earlier stage and will spread better through
the vaccinated flock. The age at which chickens can be successfully vaccinated depends on the level of
maternally derived antibodies (MDA) and therefore on the type of birds and on the way the parent
breeding flock is vaccinated.
Guideline:
- Broilers derived from parent flocks vaccinated with live Gumboro vaccines only, can be vaccinated from day 7-14.
- Broilers derived from parent flocks vaccinated with inactivated Gumboro vaccines, can be vaccinated from day 14-17.
- The vaccination of future laying stock derived from parent flocks vaccinated with live
Gumboro vaccines only, can be carried out from day 14-21.
- The vaccination of future laying stock derived from parent flocks vaccinated with inactivated
Gumboro vaccines, should be carried out from day 21-28.
The above scheme is based on the fact that during these periods the MDA levels in that particular
progeny have decreased sufficiently (e.g. log2 VN titre between approximately 7.0 and 8.5) to be able
to vaccinate them successfully with Nobilis Gumboro 228E but are still high enough to protect them
against infection with circulating field virus.
Dosage
One dose per bird.
Method of administration
Via the drinking water.
The vials should be opened under water. Use cool, clean water which is free of iron and chlorine. By
adding 2 gram skimmed milk powder per litre of water the virus retains its activity much longer. Ensure
uptake of all the vaccine-medicated water in 2 hours. Depending on the weather conditions, it may be
advisable to deprive the birds of water prior to vaccination. A sufficient number of water containers to
provide adequate drinking space is essential. These should be clean and free from traces of detergents
and disinfectants. Dissolve 1000 doses in as many litres of water as the age of the birds in days, to a
maximum of 40 litres. The vaccine should be given in the early morning as this is the main period for
drinking or the cool period on a hot day. When vaccinating larger flocks, it is advisable to begin by
dissolving only part of the vaccine. If vaccine is administered through a central water supply or a
proportioner, great care should be taken. For numbers of birds between standard dosages, the next
higher dosage should be chosen.

Vials each containing 1000 or 2500 doses in packs of 10 vials.
Storage
Store between 2-8°C in the dark.
Precautions
- Wash and disinfect hands and equipment after vaccination.
- Vaccinate healthy birds only.
- Each vial should be used immediately after opening.
